Lanza's salamander is not a subspecies of S. atra, so some people may say it's not an alpine salamander... well, of course: Not by name. But let me tell you a secret: These little guys don't even know their name. And alpine is what they definitely are, living in a region starting at 2000 m above sea level.

S. a. prenjensis' subspecies status is disputed. Anyway, these samalanders can be found at about 500 m above sea level while "regular" alpine salamanders do not go below 800 m.
